Black Houston Therapist
Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just depressed? Sometimes life can be hard but you don’t have to try and navigate it all alone. I would love to help guide you through this rough season as well as celebrate it with you when you come out of it.
Normalized conversations around black mental health and why therapy, healing, and wellness, are paramount to survival. The black experience in America has for centuries been symbolized by historical and social injustices that still manifest today as racism and violence. To further compound these issues, societal structures and institutions have been built to continually disadvantage and widen the already existing inequities. Add all these external factors along with individual struggles of everyday life has caused a growing mental health crisis among black people.
Barriers to accessing proper mental health care for African Americans include: inaccessibility to mental health care services, discrimination, denial, mistrust of the healthcare system, the cultural stigma surrounding mental health, and a lack of awareness and knowledge about mental health.
The American Psychiatric Association reports that; only 1 in 3 African Americans who need mental health care receives it and are less likely to get quality evidence-based therapy and consistent care.
The ability to overcome mental health issues starts with asking for help. This first step opens doors to acceptance, normalizing, and most importantly, healing. Not only does your life depend on it but also your community and generations after.
Culturally competent therapy goes a long way into affirming and validating the black experience. It creates safe healing spaces where black people feel seen and heard. The right coping strategies are needed to combat stress and build resilience. Therapy is also the avenue through which you learn to communicate struggles, create boundaries, regulate our emotions, and care for yourself.
