Latina therapist in Houston and its surrounding areas.
My name is Jhoánie (Joe-Annie) Romero, and I am an LPC-Associate under the supervision of Diana Kurtz, LPC-S. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus in Psychology and a minor in Health Education from the University of Houston-Main Campus. I obtained a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Palo Alto University. I proudly graduated with honors from both institutions.
I believe each individual holds unique characteristics influenced by our environment, past life events, and background. Thus, we all experience life differently. I have experience working with different populations including individuals experiencing mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder; anxiety; trauma; life adjustments; and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
I worked as a Registered Behavioral Technician (RBT) in an out-patient clinic for 3 years. As an RBT, I performed Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy in a one-on-one setting with adolescents and adults diagnosed with ASD. My interest in the mental health field grew from my time there.
I enjoy helping children, adolescents, and adults navigate through different obstacles that are preventing them from living the life they seek. I do this by teaching my clients mindfulness, coping & problem-solving skills, and by helping them identify faulty thinking-patterns. I implement Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), ABA, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Positive Psychology, and Art Therapy through a Person-Centered framework. My overall aim is to create a safe, welcoming environment for everyone.
During my free time I spend time with my loved ones and my 3 furry companions. I enjoy binging TV shows, watching Japanese animation, and occasionally playing video games. I absolutely love traveling and hiking.
As a hobby I run an Instagram account with District Counseling to spread mental health awareness and teach individuals therapy techniques.
